1. Traditional kitchens offer the elegance and detail of a formal kitchen with the storage and functionality of a modern kitchen.

2. Kitchen cabinets are predominately framed or flush inset with raised-panel doors to provide extra character. Glazed or distressed finishing and visible hinges are popular choices in traditional kitchen design.

3. Detail and Ornamentation. Traditional kitchens have added detail throughout including arches, crown moulding, beam ceilings, island legs with pilasters, chandeliers and furniture-style cabinets.

4. Decorative mouldings, corbels and cabinet door inserts. Traditional kitchen design allows the freedom to add moulding and corbels at the end of cabinets or between cabinets on either side of the stove or on the range hood. Cabinet door inserts vary and can include antique glass, wood mullions or beveled edges to provide a decorative but cohesive finish to the cabinets.

5. Soft, muted colour scheme. Most traditional kitchens incorporate soft whites, taupes, light greys or greens into their cabinets or walls.

6. Premium countertops. Traditional approaches favour non-shiny finishes in a light coloured quartz or granite countertop.

7. Avoid streamlined hardware and lighting. Choose faucet and light fixtures that have a unique shape or detail. Traditional kitchens commonly use crystal or brass lighting fixtures to add elegance to the space.
